This was a personal project to build the ultimate E28 M5 / E24 M6 exhaust system combining excellent free-flow characteristics with a sound level not much greater than stock.

E28 M5 / E24 M6 EXHAUST PROJECT

I've worked with a local fabricator to design this cat-back system for the E28 M5 / E24 M6*.  The system was designed with two priorities: low noise and improved flow.  The fabricator has some very serious work (like Nissan Motorsport) in his resume, and is a true professional who has been in the same location almost as long as I've been alive.  He has done custom exhaust for two cars of mine (my old 535i Turbo and the UUC Motorwerks A4 Turbo), so I know how he works and the quality of the results.  When I sold the 535i Turbo, the exhaust was exactly 10 years old... it looked almost brand new.

* for M6 with production date up to 10/87 and equipped with catalytic converter.
The system is all T-304 stainless steel, a replica of the factory layout but with 2.25" dual pipes going through a free-flowing resonator and muffler.  All the parts are custom fabricated, no off-the-shelf components.

Spec for the muffler design is quiet, just a mellower tone than stock.

Specifications:
  • complete "cat back" system.
  • all T-304 stainless steel construction.
  • dual 2.25" tubing.
  • resonator and muffler optimized for free flow and low sound level, custom-made for this application.
  • simple exhaust tips with a slight angle-cut.
  • uses all stock mounting points and hangars.

After installing the first exhaust on Jeff G.'s car, this is what he had to say about it:

To All:

I just picked up my car at Rob's house and thought I would pass along my
impressions of the new exhaust:

Sound:  From inside the car at idle the sound is very similar to stock.
From the outside it has a deeper, more serious tone, which I think sounds
great.  At cruising speeds the sound inside the car is also very similar to
stock.

Construction:  Looks really well put together, the stainless looks very
nice, welds look clean.  As Rob said, the tips are an extension of the
pipes, but finished with a nice beveled edge.  They are also closer to the
bumper, and do not extend out as much.  It gives the back of the car a
cleaner, dare I say, updated look.

Performance:  The car definitely felt stronger above 3,500 rpms, we did some
0-70 mph runs and it pulled real strong.  We didn't get to do any baseline
testing earlier because of traffic, and today it was a balmy 98 degrees in
the Garden State, so everything is relative.

Overall I think you'll be pleased with it.  For reference, my car has 46,000
miles on it, the only engine mods are a chip and K&N filter.

Regards,
Jeff G.
